Update: Live photos
Many thanks to Maki and Nao for a great live performance!
This mix has been a long time coming, its a collection of darkest dubstep tracks I have found in recent months.
Great new discoveries include Objekt, a Berlin based artist who seems to have only released one 12 inch, but with two awesome minimal dubstep tracks. Cloaks from UK who have been releasing more experimental noisy tracks over the last two years. Also Oyaarss from Latvia, who has a lot of tracks on soundcloud etc, but not very much released. I will be watching these artists carefully for new material. This is also my first mix with tracks from Ekaros. I downloaded his free tracks from last.fm some months ago and then bought the Dust e.p. His tracks have quickly become favourites.
Selfsimilar – Fallen Sun Rising
Ekaros – Enkeli
Vaccine – Signal To Noise
RAkoon – Blur
Objekt – Tinderbox
Oyaarss – A La Holeage
Selfsimilar – 9mm
Chasing Shadows – Typhoon
Tyler Bates – Ephors
Cloaks – Sixmenace Two
Cloaks – Detritus
Lone Wolf – The Plague
King cannibal – Hundred Eyes Closed
Ekaros – Dust
Ekaros – Vibrio Comma
I am slow posting this, but I was very glad last month to hear this mash up by Instamatic, Francis in the Desert (Controlfreak vs Sage Francis). Its a really nicely put together mash up of my track Desert Fox with Sage Francis – Slow Down Ghandi.
Instamatic is based in London, creating audio and video mash-ups and also produces one of the longest running podcasts. Radio Clash is dedicated to mash ups and all kinds of unexpected cover versions and a capellas. There are over 200 episodes each based on a particular theme, and its well worth checking out.
I’ve made my Desert Fox ep available for free download from Bandcamp. It was released back in 2009, but I recently donated one of the tracks “Drop Your Guns” to the Nihon Kizuna Compilation dedicated to raising money for Japan disaster aid.
Four weeks have passed since the 9.0M earthquake hit near the north east coast of Japan, causing a devastating Tsunami. Here in Tokyo the damage was minimal, but strong aftershocks continue even now. The worst hit areas are just a few hundred miles north, but watching news coverage of the destruction and relief efforts on television, made it seems like some distant place.
The crisis at Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant has been the main focus of the news overshadowing the humanitarian crisis. Whilst the situation at the plant still remains very serious, the danger has been exaggerated and sensationalized by nearly all mainstream press. Foreign embassies in Japan have also been extremely conservative, suggesting people leave Tokyo or Japan when there is no real need according to expert opinion. It has caused a lot of people to panic, myself included I’m sorry to say.
Now spring is upon us, and despite another 7.4 quake yesterday, in Tokyo spirits are high and life has largely returned to normal.
One group of musicians who didn’t panic, responded to the disaster by creating a compilation with all proceeds going to the Japanese Red Cross. Artists Broken Haze, Laurent Fintoni, XLII, Audace appealed to international artists to donate music for the Nihon Kizuna compilation which has already raised over $20K. I have donated a track for a free bonus compilation was released Today, four weeks after the Earthquake.
Nihon Kizuna – 50 tracks, £10
Nihon Kizuna Bonus – 34 tracks, free or pay what you want.
This is a new work in progress, still really rough but I could not resist posting up as my first track of 2011 before I head out on my long anticipated trip to India. I am still on a filth-step bent, taking a lot of influence from artists like Chasing Shadows, and of course 16Bit. There is also some influence from Goth-Trad and Ekaros in there, I’ve been listening to them a lot lately.
Hoping to catch some bass waves at New Dehli event Bass Foundation 2 year anniversary event next week!
Loose Cannon – more Dub terror for Generation Kill!
Back To Chill 4th Anniversary at Club Asia in Shibuya is gonna be a massive night. Goth Trad is one of the leading exponents of the dubstep movement in Japan, and barely needs an introduction. He will be dealing out an overwhelming dose of bass medicine as always.
16 Bit are producing the freshest razor-sharp, hard-hitting dubstep tracks you’ll hear. This UK-based duo also excel at remixing other artists tracks, everything they touch turns to gold. Its great to have them in Tokyo, I can’t wait to see what they unleash.
If that wasn’t enough, there will also be resident and guest DJs playing back to back, including 100Mado, ENA, Ikkaku, Dubtro, Harukata and Endless. That’s gonna be enough bass to make an elephant whale sick! More info at www.backtochill.com
Another work in progress for an upcoming release. I have to warn you, its not nice music. Also I’ve completed the previous two tracks. Many thanks to Luke Chaos for helping me master them. Now re-uploaded to soundcloud.
